Ramadan and Eid Al Fitr 2022 Dates Announced

The possible dates of Eid Al Fitr and Ramadan have been announced. Ibrahim Al Jarwan, a member of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences based in the UAE has revealed the possible dates of Eid Al Fitr and Ramadan in UAE.

In this year 2022, the holy month of Ramadan is expected to begin on April 2, 2022. According to Ibrahim Al-Jarwan, member of the International Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences. Dates are subject to change, depending on the crescent sighting.

Al-Jarwan forecasted that the Jumada Al Akhirah – the 6th month of the Islamic calendar year – will begin on Tuesday, January 4, 2022. Thus, there are three months left for Ramadan.

Eid al-Fitr for the year 2022 will be celebrated on sundown of Monday, May 2nd ending at sundown on Tuesday, May 3rd. Eid al-Fitr is on the first day of the month of Shawwal and marks the end of Ramadan and the beginning of a feast that breaks the fast.

The Islamic calendar is lunar, meaning each month begins with the new astronomical moon. As lunar months are shorter than solar, the Islamic calendar does not correspond with the Gregorian calendar followed in the West and means the Holy Month occurs around 11 days earlier every year.

Ramadan is the 9th month of the Hijri year, which is based on the lunar calendar. Hijri calendar began in 622 Gregorian calendar year when Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) migrated from Makkah to Madinah.

Ramadan starts when the crescent moon coincides with the astronomical new moon. The exact date will be decided by the UAE’s Moon Sighting Committee, agreed upon by the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department.

During Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Muslims devote themselves to prayer, acts of charity and fasting from dawn to sunset. The pre-dawn meal before the fast is called the suhur, while the meal at sunset that breaks the fast is called iftar.

The end of Ramadan in the UAE is usually marked by a holiday for the public and private sectors. In 2022, based on the UAE Government holiday guide, the Eid al Fitr holidays will take place from Ramadan 29 until Shawwal 3, based on the Islamic calendar.

This likely coincides with the Gregorian dates of Monday, May 2 to Wednesday, May 5, 2022. This means UAE residents could benefit from a four-day holiday.

As per holiday calendar, the UAE residents will have Eid Al Fitr holidays from Ramadan 29 to Shawwal 3.
