Dussehra 2021- Puja Timings and Importance

Dussehra, also known as ‘Vijayadashami’, marks one of the important religious festivals celebrated in India. The Vijayadashami day is considered as the end day of the nine-day festive period of Navratri, say, the tenth day is celebrated. It includes the celebration of Durga Puja along with.

In the year 2021, Dussehra begins on 14th October 2021 at 6:52 pm and ends on 15th October 2021 at 6:02 pm. According to the belief, Dussehra is considered to be the day Lord Rama defeated Ravana along with his army in a battle. The significance of the day is considered as ‘the day of the victory’ with all goodness. Also, on this day the Goddess Durga clashed with the demon Mahishasura’s army, and buffalo were slain once and for all.

The Dashami and Dussehra follow different rituals. But the message conveyed on this day is the same, meaning, the defeat of evil by God. In India, many performances are organized in the northern parts of the country. Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, and some more states are included in it. This year, Ramleela performance is organized in which the epic of Ravana, Kumbhakaran, and Meghnad are burnt. This depicts and conveys the message of good happening over bad.

Along with, there will be plays done by people depicting the life and glory of Lord Rama. The idols of Goddess Durga and her kids are immersed too. On the eve of Vijayadasami, the devotees’ mix rice, vermilion, and yogurt as a form of Tika. They apply this on the young family members’ forehead. This is a tradition of blessing the other members of the family in the coming years. In the Tika, the red color symbolizes pure blood which helps the family to tie together. The elder member of the family gives Dakshina to younger ones as a form o happiness combined with blessing.

The people wear shades of purple color outfits for the celebrations on this day. This color mentions the power of peace and intellect. The color is associated with power, luxury, royalty and represents wealth too.
